Mary A. Smus

Mary A. Smus, 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 7, 2024, with loving family at her side. Born February 21, 1931, daughter of the late John W. and Tekla (Gancarz) Smus, she was a graduate of Cathedral High School. Mary was an office manager for Coopers & Lybrand Accounting for forty-four years until her retirement in 1992. A devout Catholic, she was a communicant of the former Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Springfield before its closing. Mary was an avid tennis fan and loved to play bingo. During her life, she traveled the world extensively with her father and brother. Mary was always generous with her time, either performing philanthropic deeds, like reading the daily newspaper and other published articles on the radio, for the blind, or spending time with her family. Most of all, Mary will be remembered for her exuberant personality and love for her entire family and close friends. She was always willing to help at any time and was always there for her family, whether it was sending a birthday card, reaching out during illness, attending countless birthday parties and family/friend events, driving someone to a doctor’s appointment or just sharing her stories and laughter at gatherings. She will be greatly missed. Mary is survived by her loving sister, Agnes Bogacz of Springfield; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was predeceased by her eleven siblings, Rev. John Smus, Joseph Smus, Raymond Smus, Anne Stanley, Angie Smus, Evelyn Kaczynski, Wanda Smus, Statia Staszko, Wanda Adamski, Stanley Smus, and Richard Smus. Mary’s family would like to thank the Wellington Memory Care Facility for their devoted care of Mary over the past five years, and Beacon Hospice, for their compassion and care of Mary over the last year. Calling hours for Mary will be held Thursday from 4-7PM at Kozikowski Funeral Home, 565 Front St., Chicopee. Family and friends are asked to meet directly on Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1023 Parker St., Springfield, for a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial for Mary. Committal service and burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Chicopee. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
