Virginia N. Lyons

Virginia N. (Lynch) Lyons, 83, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on September 13, 2013. Born on August 20, 1930 in Chicopee, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Ackerman) Lynch. A lifelong resident of Chicopee, Virginia went to the local schools and in 1947 she married the love of her life and childhood sweetheart, John J. Lyons. For over 65 years they enjoyed the wonderful family life with which they were blessed. In 1957 Virginia began her career with the Howard Johnson Family restaurant, later owned by the Marriott, first as a waitress, and later in management where she worked for over 40 years. When she wasn’t working she centered her life around her family and friends, many to whom she played matchmaker. Over the years she and her husband John loved to spend time at Cape Cod. Virginia was blessed with a loving family. Her husband John, a longtime Chicopee letter carrier referred to her as Bubs. She spent her time over the last two and a half years providing care to him and others as a volunteer at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. She leaves her son Michael Lyons and his finance SueEllen Fitzgerald of Millbury, MA, her daughters Kathleen “Kate” Maliga and her husband Robert of Chicopee and Colleen Lewis and husband Robert of Granby. A very proud grandmother of ten: Melissa Lauzon and partner Ken, Rachael Goodrich and husband Ken, Katie Akley and husband Michael, Laura McCarthy and husband Dave, Sara Michelluci and husband Aaron, Kelly Lyons, Ryan Maliga and wife Lori, Shawn Maliga and wife Alexis, Jeremy Lewis and wife Kelly, Jennifer Lewis and husband Dan. She was also loving grandmother to: Alex, Caroline, Lila, Celia, Grace, Owen, Griffin, Evan, Carsen, Madelyn, Ella, Andrew, Teddy, Penelope, Eva, Oliver and Violet. There was always a special place in her heart for her two cousins with whom she was raised – Leonard Ackerman and Butchie Bean. Virginia also leaves her son in law Paul Niemiec of Chicopee and was pre-deceased by her daughter Maureen Niemiec in 2007, her daughter in law Patricia Lyons in 1994, her sister June Provinzano and two blessed angels, her great grandchildren Ripken and Anna. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at the Kozikowski Funeral Home on 565 Front Street in Chicopee from 5 to 7 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm. The family also welcomes any friends to join them for the committal of her ashes at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Chicopee on Fuller Road on Wednesday at 10 am. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holyoke Soldiers Home Activities fund 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040 or to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Spfld., MA 01104.
