With four generations of mothers and daughters together, Barbara M. (Dreek) Mendrala, 89, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at Baystate Medical Center. Born November 9, 1929, daughter of the late Michael and Mary Dreek, she had lived in Chicopee most of her life. A graduate of the former Sacred Heart High School in Springfield, Barbara was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church and a member of its Rosary Society. She was a Third Order of St. Dominic member at the monastery in West Springfield, and retired after many years of service as a housekeeper at the Sisters of Providence motherhouse. Barbara was predeceased in 2000 by her husband, Edward J. Mendrala, and also predeceased by her son, Edjue, and daughter, Mary. Barbara is survived by her loving daughters, Pat and Dan Nickett of Southwick, Cindy and Mike Sullivan of CT, and Donna and Rodney Howe of ME; sister, Frances Masotti of West Springfield; and several cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Barbara always enjoyed a great NOSTROVIA toast! Her family would like to thank her doctors and nurses at Baystate Medical Center and D’Amour Center for the loving care and attention given to her. Funeral services for Barbara will be held Saturday from Kozikowski Funeral Home, 565 Front St., Chicopee, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM in St. Anthony of Padua Church, St. Anthony St., Chicopee. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours are Saturday morning from 8:30-10:30AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dominican Nuns, Mother of God Monastery, 1430 Riverdale St., West Springfield, MA 01089.
