Helen E. (Sabat) Dziekan, 93, a lifelong Chicopee resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Baystate Medical Center. Born on January 19, 1921, daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Drozd) Sabat, she was a communicant of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop & Martyr, and a member of its Rosary Society. A graduate of Chicopee High School, Class of 1939, Helen was a true member of the greatest generation as during World War II she worked at the Springfield Armory assembling the M-1 Garand, the primary battle rifle carried by most of our soldiers on D-Day and throughout the War. Helen retired from the Chicopee Public Schools food services, serving her community and students at Chicopee Comp High School for twenty-one years. She was a member of the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association. Helen was predeceased in 1985 by her beloved husband, Ludwig H. Dziekan. She is survived by her loving children, Michael W. Dziekan and his wife Carolina of Sudbury, Mary Swasey and her husband Richard of Boston, and Louise Wasley and her husband Keith of South Chatham; four cherished grandchildren, Lauren, James, and Katherine Wasley, and Ana Swasey; her sister-in-law, Mary Sabat of Chicopee; dear friend, Lynn, of Eddy, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Anthony, Frank, and Louis Sabat, and her sisters, Anna Sabat and Frances Dulski. Funeral services for Helen will be held Thursday morning from Kozikowski Funeral Home, 565 Front St., Chicopee, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM in St. Stanislaus Basilica. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 9-10:30AM.
