Helen C. Banas

Helen Louise (Cygan) Banas, 96, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, at Agawam East Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born March 11, 1930, to the late Jakub and Ludwika (Wlodyka) Cygan, Helen was a lifelong Chicopee resident and a graduate of Chicopee High School. Helen enjoyed a distinguished career at Chicopee Savings Bank, where she worked in the mortgage and loan department and served as a Vice President. She retired at the age of 70 after many years of dedicated service. Helen was a devoted and active communicant of St. Stanislaus Basilica. She was a member of the Rosary Society and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, served as treasurer of the Parish Council, managed the finances for the parish bazaar, and managed the Christmas booth, and was the lead facilitator for the pierogi-making efforts. In 2003, Helen and her husband, Joseph, were honored with the Father Lawrence Cyman Award from St. Stanislaus School. She was also recognized with a Shining Star Award from the Chicopee Chamber of Commerce for her positive impact on the community. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph M. Banas, in 2012. She is survived by her daughters, Susan L. Bousquet and Jo Ann Dusza-Athas and husband Ted Athas, all of Chicopee; five grandchildren, Jill Ryan, Amanda Pueschel and husband Jake, Benjamin Dusza and wife Michelle, Sarah Bousquet, and Adam Bousquet; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; close family friend Chuck Gorman; and many nieces and nephews. Helen was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Gerald P. Bousquet, Jr., and her siblings, Walter, Edward, Paul, John Cygan, Genevieve Masucci and Adele Guzek. Funeral services for Helen will be held on Monday, June 8th, beginning at 9AM at Kozikowski Funeral Home, 565 Front St., Chicopee, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop & Martyr, 566 Front St., Chicopee. Committal and burial will follow at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2:00-5:00PM.
