Stanley Filip

Stanley Filip, 94, retired West Springfield Fire Fighter, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, with loving family at his side. Born December 21, 1926, son of the late Frank and Josephine (Fonfara) Filip, he was a lifelong West Springfield resident. Stanley was a communicant of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop & Martyr, and was proud to serve his country in the US Merchant Marines during WWII and in the US Army during the Korean War. He retired after many years of service to his community as a firefighter, and previously had worked for Springfield Street Railway and Monsanto Corp. Family was the centerpiece of Stanley’s life and he was happiest being with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed baking apple pies and making pancakes for everyone. Stanley was an avid golfer, and spent his retirement years woodworking, tinkering and rebuilding around the house. Stanley was predeceased in 2009 by his beloved wife of fifty-nine years, Irene (Kalinowski) Filip. He is survived by his loving children, Stephen F. Filip of West Springfield, Roberta J. Filip and longtime partner, Samuel, of Hartford, CT, and Gerard S. Filip and wife Celene of West Springfield; four cherished grandchildren, Tammy Russell and husband Michael of West Springfield, Gerard S. Filip, Jr. and wife Maggie of Ludlow, Nathan Filip and wife Caitlin of Holden, and Jenna Rosado of West Springfield; twelve treasured great-grandchildren, Andrew, Michael, Ryan, Jonathan, Christopher, Vyla, Kiernan, Gabriel, Cayson, Lyla, Pippa and Lincoln; nieces, Christine Stadnicki and Ann Cote; and nephew, Ronald Matyszczyk. He was predeceased by his sister, Victoria Stadnicki and brother, Henry Filip. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9AM from Kozikowski Funeral Home, 565 Front St., Chicopee, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in St. Stanislaus Basilica. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday from 4-6PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Stanislaus Ministry of Care, 566 Front St., Chicopee, MA 01013, or the charity of one’s choice.
